The new remix: AI, authorship & challenges for rights management
May 8 - 4:45 pm - 5:00 pm
In his seminal work Remix, Lawrence Lessig explored how digital technologies were reshaping culture by enabling a new form of participation—one where users became creators through the re-use and recombination of existing content. Today, we are witnessing a new kind of remix: not by humans reinterpreting art, but by machines generating it. As artificial intelligence becomes an increasingly powerful tool for creating music, fundamental questions about authorship, ownership, and rights management resurface in a radically different context. What happens to rights management systems when music is composed by algorithms—or collaboratively by humans and machines?
